RO CHEMICALS BY TYPE - CLEANERS

IWE CC1 is a fast acting, broad-spectrum biocide used for cleaning Reverse Osmosis and Nano-Filtration membranes. It can be used both on and off-line to eliminate microbiological fouling. When used in potable water applications, IWE CC1 should be used ‘off-line’. IWE CC1 is also effective in removing biofilm from pumps, tanks and pipe-work. Best results are obtained when IWE CC1 is used at a pH 5.5 – 7.0. Residual IWE CC1 can be deactivated to harmless byproducts by using sodium bisulphite. IWE CC1 is readily biodegradable in the environment; the degradation rate is enhanced at increasing pH and temperature.

Application

When used ‘off-line’ as a membrane cleaner, IWE CC1 should be dosed at 40 – 80mg/l for periods up to 60 minutes. When used ‘on-line’ in non-potable applications IWE CC1 should be dosed at 100 – 200mg/l for 30 minutes. Pre-diluting IWE CC1 prior to use is not recommended as this will cause rapid degradation of the solution and loss of efficacy.

Health and Safety

IWE CC1 is based on an organo-bromine compound. It is corrosive to carbon steel and certain other alloys so all pumps, pipe-work and tanks should be made from acid resistant materials. A material safety data sheet is available on request.

Classification

CHIP: Harmful | UN: Corrosive

IWE CC2 is a broad spectrum biocide for use in cleaning Reverse Osmosis and Nano-Filtration systems. It can be used both on and off-line to eliminate microbiological fouling but when used in potable water applications, IWE CC2 should be used ‘off-line’. IWE CC2 can be used in pre-treatment systems for the prevention of biofouling in pumps, tanks and pipe-work. It is deactivated to harmless by-products by using sodium bisulphite.

Application

When cleaning fouled membranes ‘off-line’, IWE CC2 should be dosed at 1,000 -1,500mg/l for 6-8 hours. When used ‘on-line’ IWE CC2 should be dosed at 700-1,000mg/l for 8-12 hours once every 5 to 21 days depending on the severity of the fouling. IWE CC2 has good biostatic properties and can be used for membrane preservation and storage as per the guidelines below:

24-36 hours 300mg/l = 0.03%

36-168 hours 500mg/l = 0.05%

IWE CC3 is a blended chelating agent and non-ionic surfactant and has been developed as an alkaline general purpose cleaner for membrane systems. IWE CC3 will help to remove both organic and inorganic based deposits. IWE CC3 is classified as ‘readily biodegradable’ and is an excellent adjunct when used in combination with other IWE membrane cleaners.

Working with enhanced temperature is strongly recommended to improve the cleaning performance. Cleaning solutions using IWE CC3 have a tendency to foam. After cleaning, the membrane system should be thoroughly flushed out, until the pH values of the feed and the discharge sides of the membrane are the same. IWE CC3 can be diluted and is fully miscible with water in all proportions.

IWE CC5 has been developed as a general-purpose cleaner for inorganic scale and iron deposits found in most types of membrane system. It is also highly effective at removing organic deposits from severely fouled systems.

Application

IWE CC5 is effective when used as a 1-2% solution and alternately soaked and recycled through the membrane system for 1-2 hours. Cleaning solution pH should be the minimum recommended by the membrane manufacturer. If the pH starts to rise during the cleaning process additional IWE CC5 should be added or the cleaning solution replaced. After cleaning, IWE CC5 cleaning solutions should be slowly neutralised to pH 6-7 using an alkaline solution before discharge, as the presence of acid solutions can be damaging to concrete and cement lined discharge pipes. Before returning the plant to service, the membrane system should be thoroughly flushed, until the pH of the feed and the concentrate are similar. The product water conductivity may initially be high but will return to normal after a few hours of operation. IWE CC5 is fully miscible with water in all proportions.

Health and Safety

IWE CC5 is a mixture of nitric and phosphoric acids and care should be taken during handling. Solutions of IWE CC5 are corrosive to carbon steel and many other metals and materials of construction, so all chemical tanks, pumps and pipe-work must be made from acid-resistant materials. Observe all safety precautions shown in the material safety data sheet, available on request.

IWE CC6 has been developed as an inorganic scale cleaner and iron deposit remover for use in Reverse Osmosis and Nano-filtration membrane systems. Used at the right concentration, its self adjusting pH ensures highest solubility of iron salts is achieved. IWE CC6 has been approved for use in drinking water applications.

Application

IWE CC6 is highly effective when used as a 3 4% solution and alternately soaked and recycled through the membrane system for 1-2 hours. Membrane manufacturers guidelines should be followed at all times. After cleaning, IWE CC6 cleaning solutions should be neutralised to pH 6-8 with an alkaline solution before discharge, as the presence of low pH solutions can be damaging to concrete and cement lined discharge pipes. Before returning the plant to service, the membrane system should be thoroughly flushed, until the pH values of the feed and the discharge ends of the system are the same. The product water conductivity may initially be high but will revert to normal after a few hours operation. IWE CC6 can be diluted and is fully miscible with water in all proportions.

Health and Safety
