Applications
Purolite specialty adsorbents are solid
copolymers with highly porous structures
designed to adsorb and desorb a wide variety
of complex molecules and structures in
a range of environments.
They adsorbents are designed to provide
high capacity and target selectivity to
enhance purification. Significant productivity
gains can be relalised by matching the
right adsorbent with the system to be
purified.

While ordinary commercial styrene-based
sulphonic acid resins may often be used
for chemical reactions catalysed by the
H+ or M+ ions, faster process times, better
yields and higher product purity may be
obtained by using a properly designed
and purified catalyst . Purolite catalyst
resins are supplied either completely
water-swollen, or dried to specification.

Purolite "Separlite" ion exchange
resins for chromatography are high quality
crosslinked poly(styrene)-based cation
and anion exchangers with closely sized
spherical bead form, suitable for separations
which depend on relatively small differences
of affinity of the materials being chromatographed.
They are designed mainly for use in ion
exchange columns and industrial plant.
They are not for capillary use in e.g.
HPLC equipment.

Purolite ready to use mixed beds are
specially prepared high quality resin
mixtures designed for direct purification
of water. The ratio of component resins
has been specifically tailored to provide
high capacity. Performance, of the ready
to use mixed bed, will depend on the application.
Several of the mixed beds are available
with indicators which facilitate ease
of operation where a simple visual indication
of exhaustion is desired.

Purolite® nuclear grade strong base
anion (SBA) resins are designed for polishing
high purity coolant water in primary and
secondary circuits of nuclear power plants.
These resins have higher capacity, high
mechanical strength and are more chemically
stable than standard resins. They can
be used as stand-alone products or mixed
in chemical equivalent blends with Purolite®
strong acid cation (SAC) nuclear grade
resins to form a range of nuclear grade
mixed bed resins.

Purolite® nuclear grade strong acid
cation (SAC) resins are designed for polishing
high purity coolant water in primary and
secondary circuits of nuclear power plants.
These resins have higher capacity, high
mechanical strength and are more chemically
stable than standard resins. They can
be used as stand-alone products or mixed
in chemical equivalent blends with Purolite®
strong base anion (SBA) nuclear grade
resins to form a range of nuclear grade
mixed bed resins. Several SAC resin products
are available in natural lithium 6 or
a high purity lithium 7 form.

The polishing mixed bed resins are of
the highest product quality to insure
optimum performance. The component resins
of Purolite® nuclear grade mixed bed
resins are primarily combined in ratios
of 1:1 equivalence to treat for maximum
exchangeable capacity. Other ratios are
available for high amine and all volatile
treatment (AVT) circuits. Contact Purolite
for additional details.

Macroporous strong acid cation exchangers,
from Purolite, have a unique porous structure
providing high regeneration efficiency,
resistance to osmotic shock and good kinetics.
The homogeneous structure ensures good
operating performance when treating solutions
containing inorganic salts, including
those of high molecular weight, and also
those solutions containing nitrogenous
compounds such as high molecular weight
amines. A matrix with its high porosity
ensures excellent reversible removal of
colloids, suspended solids, and any cations
of higher molecular weight.

Purolite Strong-Base Anion (SBA) exchanger
containing Type-II quaternary ammonium
groups are used for dealalization, deionization,
demineralization, desilicizers and organic
removal. SBA's have excellent operating
capacity and good kinetics even when regenerant
levels are comparitively low.
Specially tailored size grades may be
used with excellent results in most of
the usual ion-exchange column configurations.

Gel Type Polyacrylic Weak Acid Cation
exchanger (WAC). The functional carboxylic
groups give high chemical efficiency in
many applications, especially for the
removal of bicarbonate alkalinity in water
treatment and for treating aqueous organic
solutions.
The major use of WAC is in the dealkalization
and softening of waters to resuce the
ionic load on the subsequent strong acid
resin bed. Weak Acid Cation resins are
increasingly being used in special applications
including treatment of waste water streams
in order to reduce environmental pollution

Gel-type anion exchange resin with an
acrylic matrix ensures excellent chemical
and thermal stability, resistance to attrition
and osmotic shock. These properties make
the resin ideal for use in the pharmaceutical,
chemical, and food processing industries,
for the neutralization of strong acids
and for other processes.

Purolite ion exchange resins for ultra-pure
water are specially manufactured to meet
the exacting needs of the electronics
industry for wafer and microchip production
requiring the highest possible water quality
(<1 ppb Total Organic Carbon (TOC)
and >18.2 MΩ·cm resistivity,
with minimum rinse times), while eliminating
contamination of the high purity circuits
when ion exchange resin is first installed.

Purolite resins used in drug formulations
as API’s or excipients. They meet
the demands of the American (USP), European
(Ph.Eur.), British (BP) and Japanese (JP)
pharmacopoeias.Drug Master Files are held
for each, single, listed pharmaceutical
product manufactured in Purolite’s
facilities, while resins used in extraction
and purification processes, or for the
production of water for injectables, meet
the requirements of both the US Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) and the European
Union.

Purolite® is at the forefront in
meeting the new challenges of purifying
water for potable use. We continue to
develop specialized ion exchange resins
and adsorbent solutions focused on reducing
waste and operating costs. The wide variety
of contaminants needing removal often
requires a customized approach. Some contaminants
are removed by relying largely on the
ion exchange properties of our resins
(e.g. nitrate and uranium) while others
(e.g. perchlorate and TOC) rely on the
combination of unique ionic, adsorptive
and hydrophobic characteristics of our
specialty resins.
